The massive pet food recall by Menu Foods has left at least 16 pets dead and many dog and cat owners worried for their own pets. Some pet owners that have lost a pet that ate the recalled food have brought lawsuits against the company. The recall involves over 90 brands of pet food, including well known brands Iams and Eukanuba. The recalled dog and cat food is the canned and foil packet "cuts and gravy" style of food. It has been linked to kidney failure.

A veterinarian at the Animal Medical Center on the East Side of Manhattan, Dr. Ann Hohenhaus, said one cat died there over the weekend of kidney failure linked to the recalled food.

Hohenhaus said the Animal Medical Center has tested 143 animals for renal failure since worried pet owners started taking their cats and dogs in for blood and urine tests on Saturday.

"I have people coming in who haven't even said their pet's eaten the bad food, but they're worried that maybe the recall has not been broad enough, so they want their pet tested to be sure," she said.

Pet owners have been told to watch their pets for signs of anything unusual in their behavior, such as increased drinking, loss of appetite and vomitting. If you suspect your pet ate any of the recalled food and they are showing these signs, contact your veterinarian immediately.
